about

After releasing Spooky Bootlegs Volume 1 in 2003 we thought it might be a good time to put together a Vol 2 of Spooky Bootlegs. All proceeds from sales will go to 'Fly By Night' Bat Rescue here in Melb. (it’s Bandcamp only release) There’s some sick stuff on it from Australia, France Italy and is a bit of a cross cultural project with French Labels Beast and Teenage Menopause Records
We hope this will help create more exposure for all artists involved in these tough times. Lots of bands here had their album launch tours cancelled or album sales decimated in 2020 which has been devastating. We think it’s an impressive list and hopefully it will make you go on to become new fans of some of the artists on here.
Why all this support to French labels you may ask? Well Spooky Records and Beast Records have had a long standing relationship that stretches back almost as far as the first Bootleg we put out. The opening track on Volume One was 'Friends in Low Places' from The Double Agents who were one of our early releases to venture to Europe even playing at a little known Binic Folk Blues Festival when in its infancy. Soon after Digger and the Pussycats made their first trip to Europe and further cemented ties between Beast and Spooky which remain to this day. Digger even brought back a CD of Movie Star Junkies when booked to play Torino, Italy by their singer Stefano Isaia. I’ve been a fan ever since and one thing leads to another and via this the discovery of MSJ current label Teenage Menopause (Paris) and the brilliant Venre De Biche who’s music not only kept me sane but inspired during lockdown.
Beast Records and the Binic Festival have over the years with their enormous passion for Australian music have played host to countless bands from our shores and there’s no doubt that this is part of the reason Spooky Records remains viable after 21years. I can’t thank you enough.
So thanks to all involved here, Beast Records, Teenage Menopause Records, all the artists who contributed tracks and the Binic Festival for their support of not only Spooky bands but the amazing roster of Australian artists that have graced your stage and made touring Europe just that much easier.
We really hope this compilation leads to new musical discoveries for you. Seek out these artists and labels support them.

01 The Cherry Pies – What have I got
Cherry Pies is a bittersweet duo born in Torino Italy, during the lockdown of April 2020. It features Veronica Zucca on vocals piano and an old Casiotone 301 organ, and Stefano Isaia (Movie Star Junkies) on guitars and backing vocals.

02 Shifting Sands – Reject My Host
An exclusive track kindly donated to the cause. Shifting Sands have released 2 albums on Spooky Records / Beast Records born of a collaboration between Geoff Corbett, vocals (SixFtHick) and Dylan McCormack, guitar (Gentle Ben and his Sensitive Side) and the wonderful Izzy Mellor also on vocals.

03 Ventre De Biche - Où Je Cache les Choses
Under the guise of a secret society the "Great Triple International Alliance of the East", from Strasbourg, France was where Luca "Retraite" first sowed the seeds that was to become Ventre De Biche. Now based in Paris Luca’s solo records encapsulate streetwise lyrics against a musical backdrop crossing the genres from pop and soundtrack to hiphop. His latest album ‘III’ is out on the Paris label Teenage Menopause.

04 Long Hours – Nagoya Gothic
Long hours is a solo project by Melbourne based performer and artist Julian Medor.
Long hours has toured japan twice and countless shows up and down the east coast of Australia. Long hours has written, produced and recorded 14 albums, 2 split EPS with two Japanese bands he’s toured with and 3 live albums in the space of 2 years. You’ll be hard pressed to find another act with such rigorous drive. Long hours live is a display of ruthless cathartic Lofi nowave mayhem, counter balanced with post punk goth doo wop serenades.
Constantly writing, forever trying to outdo himself show after show because after all is said and done, it’s never enough.

05 Movie Star Junkies – East End Serenade
From the album Shadow of a Rose released Feb 2020. Movie Star Junkies intended to hit the ground running with a massive tour of Europe culminating with one of the top spots at the legendary Binic Festival. Spooky Records has been a long time fan of MSJ and honoured to be able to include one of their tracks on Bootleg II.

06 If So Why – Death Spoilers
If So Why pose the question “what if less was more but just occasionally more was great?” This is what happens if a noise rock band gets drunk with a post-punk band and things turn ugly. Formed in 2019 after the folding of a majority of their previous band Lost Talk, If So Why were on a streak of increasingly exciting shows and recorded an EP prior to the 2020 Melbourne lock down. Perhaps prophetic, the subject matter of the EP is inspired by various collapse and apocalyptic moods and scenarios. Songs ‘World Eater’ and ‘Last Times' could well be written now as opposed to pre-pandemic times of 2019.

07 Blowers – Time to Leave Her
A rough and raw shot of garage punk from down under, 'BLOWERS’ features a three-pronged vocal attack delivering songs themed around giving zero fucks. Released this year on Spooky and Portuguse label Chaputa Records the album has been a Australian community radio favorite even climbing to number one on the Three D Radio 20+1

08 - Screensaver - Living in an Instant
Screensaver balances frenetic energy with unsettling tonalities to create rhythmic gloom that rides the new wave to the synth-punk.
Spending three years in an incubatory state, the band began as a trans Pacific collaboration between Christopher Stephenson (Spray Paint/Exek) and Krystal Maynard (Bad Vision/ex Polo) in 2016. By 2019 the pair recruited Giles Fielke (ex Low Tide) and James Beck (Personal Touch/ex Rat Columns) on bass and drums respectively and began playing locally in late 2019 including a short run in the US. Despite the restrictions in Melbourne due to Covid-19, in 2020 the band produced their debut single Strange Anxiety – a synth heavy offering with disparate vocals, pounding toms and a weaving bass line creating a cold tension that resolves into satisfying moments of warmth. This was followed up with this single, an agitated post-punk track also included on Blow Blood Records ALTA 2 (A long time alone) compilation.
In 2021 the band are set to release their debut album.

09 - Crocodile Boogie - Once Again
From Beast Records main man Seb Blanchais his album ‘A Family Affair’ was recorded by Jibé Polidoro’s Suppa Studios in Rennes, France often dragging touring Australian musos in unannounced to create this gem of an album. “A Family Affair’ was released July 2020

10 - Belle Phoenix - Blossom of Love
Another recent Beast Record release from Australian born Finland resident. Belle’s album ‘The Glorious Dead' with the band branded ‘the Subterranean Sea’ feature a lot of diverse musicians from Australia and New York.

11 - Brian Henry Hooper - It Ain't Free
From the album I Won’t Bend For You [Bang Records}, the second posthumous album by Brian Henry Hooper (Beasts of Bourbon) is packed with cathartic melodies. Themes of mortality, perseverance, reflection, along with a beautifully bleak mischievous sense of humour are woven throughout this album, echoing Hooper’s eventful life. Released almost three years after his passing. This is the seventh album that will join Hooper’s catalogue. Produced by longstanding musical comrade and friend Mick Harvey takes the lead coordinating the completion of yet another Hooper project and delivers a masterpiece with the full support of Hooper’s wife Ninevah.

12 - Maniaxxx - Ghost Of Chance
From Turin Italy on Beast Records Maniaxxx play their own style of groovy shamanic psychedelia melt together with punk-noise violence and country-western rides.

13 - Velatine - The Witches
Experimental soundtrack electronica project from Melbourne by Loki Lockwood, Velatine released two albums in 2020 and currently working on a new release.
velatine.bandcamp.com

14 - Druids of the Gue Charette -Talking To The Moon
Another Beast Records releaseIf The Druids of The Gué Charette are named after a quiet pond lost in the heart of Brittany, their music is more inspired by the stories the elders tell in a low voice, and the secrets of those roads where it’s forbidden to go by yourself at night. The Druids are hidden behind their hoods so they can scramble the tracks, melting their garage-rock with stoner-metal and post-punk, but also shoegazing and acid-rock. In their fuzzy and reverberated black masses, they invoke at the same time Black Sabbath, The Stooges, Bauhaus and The 13th Floor Elevators.

15 - Macros - Moving
The way singer Jake Lilley delivers vocals is like an angry list of instructions says Wild Animal Records. With angular instrumentation in the Post hardcore vein that tinkers with breath and dynamic shapeshifting. Boxed as Noise punk from Melbourne band Macros, unpack it and put it back together... there’s always a piece left over.
“Shades of The Dazzling Killmen” writes Makeshift Swahili PBS 106.7 FM

16 - River of Snakes - Cool Like You
This fuzz-demented three piece have been tearing up stages and splintering ears for a decade now in their hometown of Melbourne, as well as trekking thousands of kilometres to play any interstate city and regional centre in Australia that will have them. This is a band that thrives on raw spirit and DIY attitude, "Cool like you" comes from the bands second album "Sleight of Hand", and is an excellent example of their raw dirge, fuzz-on !!

17 - Sun God Replica - Hey Rattle
SGR released 3 albums on Spooky Records and this track recorded at Creepy Hollow was part of a ill-fated 6 track EP originally pressed for a European tour. Unfortunately the final product “The God Frenzy”, a 10inch vinyl never made it to Australia as promised which meant it never got the push it deserved.

18 - Mongrel Country - Crab Claws
Without function and abandoned on the shores of Perth over a decade ago, Noise punks Mongrel Country like it ugly. The isolation of W.A has bred some strange things... and for this we should be proud. Max Ducker’s vocal delivery is akin to the old fella at your local RSL that gargles battery acid for breakfast. With nods to Bird Blobs and Lubricated Goat, it’s cooked to perfection.
mongrelcountry.bandcamp.com

19 - BBQ Haque - Malewa FuFu
From their self titled album released on Spooky late last year BBQ Haque’s 1st Menu Fixe, is full of cheap & fast street vendor charm. Marinated members are Arthur Karanikas (Fraudband, Nou Voudouh), Marc Regueiro-Mckelvie (Popolice, Teeth & Tounge, New Estate), Carla Bruce-Lee (Ashtray Boy, Cougar Vox & the Irritations, Powerline Sneakers), Danny Martinov (The Sterlings, Problem, Ryan Ferry, The Exit Keys & Right of Silence). Eat it up!

20 - Brown Spirits - Chemical Miscalculation
Brilliant Melbourne 3 piece features Tim Wold (Specimens), Agostino Soldati (Legends of Motorsport) and Ash Buscombe (Witch Hats). As they say, Kraut-laden psych jams shelved in a sound library. They currently have 3 albums out and a fourth is in progress.
